M.I. Tobias "Lord Street" JT016 JT016Tobias_mvt.jpg JT016Tobias_dial.jpg JT016Tobias_dc .jpg

"Lord Street" grade 1/2-plate movement #13,100 by M.I. Tobias, Liverpool (ca. 1930) is jeweled to the center wheel, has Massey type III escapement, and hinged dust cover. This was Tobias' best grade movement. The hands are probably original.

Wm. Robinson JT017 JT017Robinson_mvt.jpg JT017Robinson_dial .jpg

Wm. Robinson movement was M.I. Tobias' second quality watch. This 17 jewel movement, with Massey type III escapement, probably dates from the 1840s.

S.I. Tobias & Co. JT018 T018SITobias .jpg

Typical Liverpool movement with Massey type III escapement made (by Stuart & Russel?) for Samuel Tobias, who was a watch dealer in New York. Although S.I. Tobias was part of the well-known Tobias family this is not of Tobias manufacture.

C. Hequembourg Paterson, New Jersey JT019 JT019Hequembourg_mvt.jpg JT019Hequembourg_dial .jpg

Liverpool movement with single-roller lever escapement is marked for a retailer who is recorded in business in New Haven, Conn. in 1818. He must have re-located to New Jersey by 1830, this date indicated by the Chester hallmark on the original silver case.

John Moncas JT020 JT020Moncas_mvt .jpg

Typical Liverpool movement with the less-common Massey type II escapement, probably from 1820-25.

French verge (unsigned) with American watch paper JT023 JT023 french_f.jpg JT023 french_m.jpg JT023 ARFord_paper.jpg Large diameter (~6 cm case) french verge fusee, unsigned, with balance wheel visible in dial.  The silver case has makers mark "PG" in a diamond.  Repair or makers marks on the mainspring barrel (as closely as I can interpret the scratches) include "C. Guiteau 1828", "R.H. Putney", and "L. Quandale".  Baillie lists a Guiteau in Paris from 1812-25 and a Lewis Quandale in Philadelphia from 1813-25.  I have not found Putney.  The watch paper is from Sackets-Harbor, New York which had a major port facility.  The jewelry and watch trade of A.R. Ford is known from an 1839 advertisement and his house or shop is still shown on an 1864 town map.  The signature on the watchpaper is that of H.W.Pane who settled nearby in the 1840's and had a house in Sackets Harbor in 1864.
Bulova "Phantom" JT024 JT024 Phantom_m.jpg 17-ligne 21 jewel high-grade thin movement with plain polished bridges.  Cased and sold by Bulova in the early 1930's.  Bulova told me this movement was made for them by Piguet (cal.17/22)
Touchon JT025 JT025 Touchon.jpg This elegantly designed 17-ligne 21-jewel movement, marked Touchon & Co. was imported and cased in the U.S. by A.Wittnauer & Co.
